Annabeth Chase es una joven e inteligente abogada con unas firmes convicciones, que se encarga de casos que suceden en su propio vecindario. Bajo esa fachada de perfectos barrios residenciales se esconden los peores crímenes. Tras tener a su primer hijo, Annabeth vuelve al trabajo con los ánimos cargados, decidida a proteger a su comunidad y a su familia y preparada para embarcarse en los casos más difíciles. Su nueva jefa, Maureen Scofield (Kimberly Elise), una sensata y eficiente abogada, cuestiona sus estrategias legales y presiona duramente a Annabeth. Liderando el equipo se encuentra Steve Sharpe (John Carroll Lynch), uno de los grandes apoyos de Annabeth. Sin embargo, en ocasiones, se preocupa más de cómo están tratando los medios de comunicación los casos y de cómo esto afecta a la imagen del departamento que de ayudar a esclarecer el suceso. Jack (Christian Kane), el marido de Annabeth, es el hombre paciente que apoya a su mujer ante cualquier decisión que esta toma, aunque a veces esto no sea tarea fácil. En ocasiones, ser una madre trabajadora que lucha contra el crimen puede volverse demasiado duro.
