Jackie es enfermera en urgencias en un hospital de Nueva York. Tiene un sentido del humor bastante negro, dos hijas, un amante, una lesión de espalda, una aprendiz que le sigue como un perrito y unos compañeros que a veces ayudan y a veces no. Entre las cuatro paredes del centro médico, Jackie desarrolla su propia versión terrorista del mito de Robin Hood y da a los pobres lo que quita a los ricos, sean estos ricos en dinero, en órganos extraíbles para trasplantes o de cualquier otro tipo. Comparte escenario con dos médicos poco convencionales: Eleanor O'Hara, que podría sufrir un ataque e ansiedad sólo de pensar que le obligaban a comerse un perrito caliente y Fitch Cooper, con el título todavía caliente y muchos pájaros en la cabeza.
