La producción contaba la historia de Betty, una joven y brillante economista que acaba fichando en una empresa de moda para el jefe de la compañía, de quien acaba enamorándose. Una situación que Armando acaba aprovechando a su favor pero que, contra todo pronóstico, acaba volviéndose en su contra al corresponder a los sentimientos de su secretaria. Creada por Fernando Gaitán Salom, esta telenovela cosechó un éxito arrollador no solo en Colombia, sino también a nivel internacional, al alcanzar más de 180 países y ser doblada a unos 25 idiomas. Además, fue origen de múltiples versiones que fueron surgiendo tras su enorme fama, sumando hasta 28 adaptaciones en todo el mundo hasta el año 2010.
