La serie no es una secuela, precuela, spin-off ni reboot de otra serie. Tampoco está basada en un libro, por lo que no hablaremos del tema. En cuanto a quién va dirigida esta serie, cabe mencionar que Numb3rs es una mezcla entre el género policial y el de la ciencia ficción matemática. La trama gira en torno a la familia Calleigh, formada por Don Eppes, un agente especial del FBI con un gran talento para el análisis numérico; su hermano Charlie, un genio matemático que trabaja para el Departamento de Justicia; y Amita Ranjha, una graduada en matemáticas. Juntos, estos personajes ayudan a la unidad de investigación del FBI a resolver casos complejos gracias a sus extraordinarias habilidades matemáticas. La primera temporada de Numb3rs está integrada por veinticuatro episodios, y se estrenó en CBS el 24 de enero de 2005.
